The Power Of Intention
Intention is a very important aspect of our existence. It is at the very base of every action we perform, yet we take it for granted for the most part, ignoring it, not even aware of it’s influence in the way we live our lives. For an example; let’s say I want to go to the refrigerator and get a glass of milk. I can’t even get up from the chair if I don’t have… the intention of doing so. It seems to me that, during the New Year season, the word ”Intention” is used more than at any time of the year. Why is it so, when we live constantly under the influence of our intentions?
The way we use intention is a way of resolving to do something differently from now on, because we want something different in the future, a different out come, such as to lose weight, make more money, do better in school, improve a relationship, etc. All good intentions. Why is it that, a couple months down the line, we’ve left our good intentions far behind us? We still want what we wanted, and we are not even remembering the intentions we had back than, or if we remember them they are a reminder of how we failed once again.
Thinking about that, I ponder, what is missing in this picture? In a very simplistic way, I thought, that Intention has two very close friends who like to do things together, they are a Trio. Intention, Goal and Action. And then, because they are so good at what they do, they acquire more friends, like Perseverance, Patience and Motivation… wow, do we need all that to carry out our intentions? Yes, because what we want to change, are habits that are deeply rooted and cannot be changed by simply having the intention to do so.
What are the roles of all these friends? *Intention is a power that put all into motion; it’s the starter, “I want”. *Goal, it’s the planner, how are we going to accomplish that? Where do we want to go? *Action is the elbow grease, the work. So mainly they are the What I want, How am I going to get it, *Who is doing the work. And who are the friends who join them? Perseverance, Patience, Motivation. Perseverance is the one who says “keep going,” we’re not there yet. Patience reminds us “it takes time’ and Motivation keeps on reminding us of what we want, how great it is to actually have, or be what we want. Motivation gives the good feeling of satisfaction, that is already there just because we are doing what we set out to do.
Now we can super charge this team by giving them a time line, as “I want to accomplish that in six months or three months, weeks” or what ever it is that we want: and we can always modify our time line if we are getting close but not quite there yet. The important part is to keep it going.
The benefits of following up with our intentions is huge. We become more confident in ourselves, we can inspire others to do the same, we appreciate our Power of Intention, value it and use it more often.
